On February 2, 1985, the Berlin Police Department was shaken by the death of Officer Jeffery G. Casner. Officer Casner was struck by a drunk driver while directing traffic at an automobile accident.

The Casner Award is bestowed annually to the Officer(s) at the forefront of the department in effecting "Driving Under the Influence" arrests, in addition to providing the highest level of patrol services in their district.
